YOTA (Youngsters on the Air)

To Leaders of Luton Scouts
Sunday 6th December

Taking part gives Cubs at least one part of the Communicator Activity badge –

but all sections are welcome !

Did your section miss out on joining in with JOTA this year?
Those that took part enjoyed talking on the radio, finding out lots about satellite communication and receiving scientific data from some of them as well as watching TV pictures transmitted using amateur radio from the International space station. The good news is that there is another opportunity for your members to have a go! December is Youngsters on the Air (YOTA) month and Luton Scouts have the privilege of representing the UK at this international event on Sunday 6th December from midday onwards.

We will be running this as an online event like we did for JOTA. To book a slot for your section to join in YOTA, please contact me and I will arrange a Zoom meeting for them. Groups will need to provide two adults to supervise the young people in the meeting.

The Zoom meeting will be connected to the radio transmitters and receivers so that the beavers, cubs and scouts can still talk to other radio stations. The theme of our station will be “Amateur Radio in Space”. There are lots of satellites that have been put into space for use by radio amateurs and we will be using several of them during the weekend. Hopefully we will be able to schedule your session to coincide with at least one of them travelling overhead Luton!

They range from the tiny FunCube satellites that transmit information about their environment in space, along with text or picture messages, through some of the smaller Fox satellites which allow two way voice communication right up to the really big one – The International Space station (ISS) which gives good voice communication and TV pictures.

To book up or ask questions, please contact me by email, text or phone. Let me know your preferred time and the approximate numbers that are likely to join. The maximum group size will be 10-12 youth members.
